The first night as new parents...again!

5/29/09
Oh, what a night. April couldn't even keep water down. She became dehydrated, urine output dropped, and she developed clots. Once all of that was taken care of...about 4am...she was started on 2 units of blood...

10:10am April's color is finally coming back to her face. She doesn't look so dead. However, she does look like a pin-cushion. The techs from the lab even had to stick her finger and milk it into the tube to get a blood sample because they could not get a vein.

Kylee has been off the CPAP machine since about 2am. She has also been off of oxygen for sometime now. She is so beautiful. We called the NICU to check on her and the nurse said he was going to try to bottle feed her, so they may not have to put a feeding tube in. He said that she is doing really well. April can't go see her today until she finishes up the last unit of blood. I don't want to leave April and I know that Kylee is in very capable, caring hands.

April is doing much, much better. She received two units of blood and she has gotten a lot of her color back. Her speech has improved and she has enough energy to carry on a conversation.

I was happy that my brother, Matthew, made it back home from working in Denver. He came with gifts for Kylee and of course, Ayden. He seemed very excited not only to see Kylee, but also April. I think it is very nice the way he cares for her. We never had a sister, it was just the two of us, but if we did I'm sure he would treat her the way that he treats April.

At the moment her mom and sister are in the NICU with April. She was able to hold Kylee earlier and feed her. She wanted to go back for the 5:oo feeding and I let them go with her. Let them see the baby a little.

Several co-workers of April's came to visit this evening. I took them up while April was getting labs drawn to see Kylee. They are all very intelligent women and it was nice having their opinions once we were in her room on the NICU. They all seem so knowledgeable. They put me at ease a little more. Thank you ladies for visiting, it meant a lot to the both of us. Someday I'll make you dinner. That and she was once again off of the CPAP machine. But she did have a tube in her throat for feeding.

Kylee is back on the CPAP machine and April is getting the first of two more units of blood as of 11:15pm. The NICU nurse was going to try and bottle feed Kylee but it was too stressful on her so they had to go with the tube feeding. Maybe next time. Ayden went home with Grammy. She was really upset that April left her to go possibly feed Kylee.

Dr. Assaley stopped in and checked on April twice today. That means so much. He is an exceptional doctor. The entire staff that we have dealt with thus far has been fantastic.

Kylee Raine Copley entered this world at 1:18 pm today May 28, 2009. She weighed 6lbs and was 19 1/4 inches long. She was taken to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit because her lungs were not fully developed. She was given something to coat the airsacs in her lungs and by 9:00pm she was off of oxygen. Her respiration rate is still high but the professionals don't seem to be too worried about that. She will probably get a feeding tube tomorrow.

Judging by the chest x-ray the Dr. seems to think that she was at least 4 weeks premature. But all is going well. April is a little sick from the medication but just got to go to the NICU to see her baby at about 8:30. This made her feel a little better.
